New South Wales, Australia: Lightning Ridge Opal Field





Australia's northern New South Wales region is famous for its Black Opal. The (Lightning Ridge Fields) are located in near the Queensland border, along the Castlereagh Highway (route 55).

The ground around Lightning Ridge is covered with thousands of man-made holes ("Kupa piti)," or "white man's hole in the ground," as in Coober Pedy.
