Famous Gems: The Gachala Emerald
Gachala Emerald from Muzo, Colombia
The 858 carat "Gachala Emerald" was found at the Vega de San Juan mine in Gachalá (municipio de Cundinamarca), originally unearthed in 1967. The Gachala is one of the largest rough emeralds found to date, and was donated to the Smithsonian Institution by Harry Winston.

The Gachala Emerald is now located at the Smithsonian Institution's American Museum of Natural History in Washington DC.
