Shan State, Myanmar: Mong Hsu Ruby & Sapphire Mines





Myanmar's Mong Hsu Stone Tract is located in the eastern Shan State, east of Mandalay and south-east of Mogok, in northern Burma (Myanmar) has produced some of the finer rubies and sapphires in the world. Mong Hsu (meaning: "meeting with satisfaction") rubies were discovered in 1991 in the village of Sai Leng ("red sand"), and Loi Seng ("gem hills").

Rubies in the Mong Hsu region occur in alluvial gravel deposits called "byon," and are mined using hydraulic water pressure, then sorted using sluicing devices and techniques.
