Opal Mines: Virgin Valley, Nevada

The famed Virgin Valley fire opal mines are located in the Virgin Valley, which is around 35 miles south-west of Denio Junction off highway 140, on Virgin Valley Road. The Virgin Valley Mining District is in the north-western boarder region of Nevada in Humboldt County.

These mines have been producing black opals, crystal opals, fire opals and white opals, as well as fossilized opals in wood matrix for over 100 years. Some of the Virgin Valley opal mines such as the Royal Peacock Opal Mine are open for public digging (aka "noodling").
