Tuamotu: Manihi Black Pearl Farms





The first privately owned Tahitian black-pearl farm was started on the atoll of Manihi in 1966. Manihi is located in the Tuamotu archipelago, Tuamotu Archipelago 520 km (312 miles) northeast of Tahiti. The island of Manihi is a reef lagoon that consists of tiny reef and sand-spit islands, or islets called motu. Manihi's 3 1/2 miles wide by 19 miles long, interior lagoon is called Moana tea or "Peaceful Ocean," and the ocean that surrounds the reef is called Moana uri, or "Wild Ocean."
