Samal, Philippines: Zamboanga Pearl Farms

On the western side of the Philippines islands, in the Sulu Sea is the region of Zamboanga on the southern tip of Western Mindana's Zamboanga Peninsula. Pearl cultivation in Zamboanga was first attempted in the early 1900s, and cultivation in the 1960s was conducted by Zamboanga Pearl Farms Inc. The indigenous Badjaos still conduct pearl farming near Zamboanga, selling cheaper 'Badjao Pearls.' The name 'Zamboanga' is derived from the Malay word Jambangan, meaning "place of flowers."
