A pearl is an accident of nature, created by a mollusk to defend itself from the irritating effects of an unwelcome grain of sand. The animal secretes a protective substance (nacre) to shield its delicate body from the invader. In nature, a perfect, round pearl is very rare, but thanks to the ingenuity on the human race, pearls of every shape, color and size are readily available.
This site is designed to take some of the mystery and confusion out of the equation when shopping for pearls, leaving you with a knowledge and appreciation for the allure of this gem-of-the-sea.
